Despite facing significant climate impacts, the nine Pacific Island countries in this project contribute only a negligible share of global CO2 emissions.
Annual emissions show the amount of CO2 released by each country or region in 2024. The contrast is particularly striking for the Pacific: countries facing significant climate impacts contribute very little to global emissions, while a small number of major emitters account for a large share of the total.
A per-capita view would tell a different story, as population size changes the relative position of each country. Here, the focus is on scale: how much each country or region contributes to global emissions in absolute terms.
Explore the contrast between the largest annual emitters and the small contribution of the Pacific Island countries.
The value below each country / region shows annual CO2 emissions. Land-use change emissions are not included.
Each dot represents approximately 10 Mt of annual CO2 emissions.
